Aintree Circuit Club and CCW join forces to help community left reeling after atrocity

Classic Car Weekly has teamed up with Southport’s Classic & Speed event to raise funds for those affected by the terrible events in the resort this week.

Event organiser, Aintree Circuit Club, will use the classic car displays on 15 September in the town’s Victoria Park to support the families and communities affected by both the stabbings last Monday (29 July) and the riot by far-right protesters the following day – and CCW is encouraging its readers to enter their classics into the not-for-profit event.

Club chairman, Mike Ashcroft, said: ‘The club has a very long association with Southport that goes beyond running this event, with one of our founder members being from the resort, and we have a big motoring community here in the north west.

‘We were all appalled by the events in the town last week, and with the support of the Southport Flower Show and Victoria Park we want to help those who have been affected.’

The event, which has been running since 2021 and includes a sprint event held the day before the main classic displays and parades, normally brings more than 10,000 people into the resort.

Donations will be collected by Southport Hesketh Round Table at the event but Classic Car Weekly is also encouraging enthusiasts to donate to the organisation’s online fundraiser, which is aiming to gather £100,000 for the affected families.

CCW editor David Simister, who lives in the resort and was once a reporter for the Southport Champion newspaper, said: ‘As a Sandgrounder and a parent of a young child I was horrified and heartbroken by last week’s events.

‘I’m looking forward to working with Aintree Circuit Club to help all those affected and to encourage classic owners and enthusiasts to come to Southport and see it for what it really is – a wonderful seaside town that’s steeped in motoring history, including Sir Henry Segrave’s world land-speed record.’
